The Baptism of Brian Richard Mathes

On Sunday January 8th, The Baptism of our Lord on the calendar, we celebrated the sacrament of Holy Baptism for Brian Richard Mathes during the 10:00 Eucharist. Jenn, his Mom, is holding Brian while Bill, his Dad, tries to keep brother William from escaping the moment. Everyone else? Godparents, family and friends. Welcome, Brian, to your new life in Christ.

All Saints' Hosts Meal for
NE Committee on Homelessness & Hunger

Shown here are All Saints' volunteers (L) Nora Perry, JoAnne Tempest and (R) Tony Perry, Myrna Weinstein & Roger Ryan. Who else from All Saints' prepared lunch and made their way to St. Mark's to serve the meal on January 14th? Adge Martin, Amanda Martin, Michelle Haberle, Nancy Umfer, Jennifer McAnally, Jeff Welty, Denise & Walt DeWitt, Pat Ryan (our photographer) Edie & Tony Palma, Diane Laidlaw and Emily Miskofsky. We served meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed vegetables, roll and butter, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and dessert. A bag lunch to take away - bologna and cheese sandwich, apple, a pack of crackers and a drink - was also prepared for each diner.

Once again joining our volunteers were members of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, seen here with Michelle, to help us feed 61 guests for the day. We were able to provide 'seconds' for those who wanted them. This meal was paid for entirely by contributions from our congregation. Thank you, everyone, for your help and your generosity!

Blanket Sunday at All Saints'
Ironic, wasn't it? Here we were holding All Saints' annual Blanket Sunday for Church World Service on a cold and ice-treacherous Sunday. The weather limited our usual attendance (3 of us fell coming to and leaving from church) yet the brave souls who did appear at 5:30, 8:00 & 10:00 contributed generously to the blanket appeal. $5 purchased a large, warm blanket (the logo seen here) that CWS distributes to those in need in this country and throughout the world. If the weather kept you indoors please know we still have contribution envelopes available. It's not too late to make a donation. Thank you!

Souper Bowl Sunday at All Saints'Dolores Ryan is asking all of the Sunday School children to bring one canned good each (soup, vegetable, fruit, etc.) to church on Super Bowl Sunday. Your Interim Rector is asking our adults to join the children by bringing an offering on February 5th, as well. Steve will donate anything but broccoli. The goal is 100 cans! Would you be willing to look on your shelf or purchase an extra canned item on your next trip to the grocery store? Not enough time? We accept currency, too. All canned items - and cash - will be delivered to Somerton Food Bank. Thanks for your generosity. And on February 5th? Go Eagles! Wait ... got that wrong. Sigh.

February 8th is All Saints' Uno Pizzeria Day
PIzza? Burgers? Steaks? Appetizers.....wait, you want me to choose just one? No ... that's simply not possible! I'm glad I won't have to when we stop by Uno's Pizzeria at the Franklin Mills Mall on Wednesday, February 8th. The question is - who's going to join me? The 2012 Christmas Bazzar is already under way to raise some 'dough' so come join us to help the cause! Look for your voucher in the Sunday leaflet. Don't forget it! In order to raise some dough you need to have the voucher in hand. Hope to see you all there. Voucher's are good all day for 20% off your entire order (minus tip of course!). Not sure you will remember to pick up a voucher? Click here to download and print a copy of the voucher at home.

Valentine's Breakfast - February 11th
Saturday February 11th at 9:00 am. Pancakes covered with rose petals. Heart-shaped scrapple? What a conundrum! Little butter things sculpted like flowers. Pancakes with strawberries? Maybe. Pancake Dinner!
Shrove Tuesday this year is February 21st. Shrove Tuesday, aka Fat Tuesday, Mardis Gras, Pancake Day - the day before Lent begins - has been a time to clean out the pantry. Making and eating some rich foods was considered a last feast - with ingredients such as sugar, fat and eggs - whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent. One of the best ways to use up all the good stuff? Pancakes and everything that goes with them! $5 adults and $4 for kids.Time & place? 4-7 pm in Friendship Hall.

Programs for our Lenten Dinners
We have a guest coming to dinner. Two dinners, actually. On Tuesday February 28th and Tuesday March 6th please join me in welcoming The Rev. Roy Almquist as our presenter for these two evenings. For 16 years Roy was the bishop of the SE Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) more commonly referred to as the Lutheran Church. Today, because of the joint sharing agreement between The Episcopal Church and the Lutheran Church, Roy serves as the Interim Rector of Washington Memorial Chapel (Episcopal) in Valley Forge. His program presentation on both evenings will focus on Stewardship - a broad understanding of its meaning on the first evening and focused more at the congregational level for the second. Roy's calendar is often full and we are fortunate to have him with us. Please make every effort to meet, listen, and dialogue with him during our first two Lenten Tuesdays together.
The final two Tuesdays will feature a documentary developed and hosted by Peter Jennings, former anchor of ABC's Evening News. Members of our Confirmation & Reception class from last year will be familiar with the program. Brokaw will take us on a journey entitled, "The Search for Paul," traveling to the same places the Apostle Paul journeyed in his lifetime. This trip, however, will engage 21st century pilgrims, seekers and the just curious. Please come and make the journey with us. It is an engaging experience, even if you have seen it before ;>)
All four Lenten programs begin at 6:45 pm followed by Compline at 7:30 pm.

People NewsBob Buckley has had a couple of falls - not ice related - necessitating repeat trips to the hospital. The hope, of course, is that physicians and therapists can find and correct the cause of his loss of balance. Prayers, please.
It was 'thrice on the ice' a couple of Sundays ago. Remember the little snowfall that that turned into big ice? Dot Thornton and Evan Evans fell coming to church and Ken Chalmers fell leaving church! Dot needed an overnight in the hospital followed by an appointment to see about the pain in her back. Keep her in your prayers. The last we checked, Evan and Ken are standing up straight again. What a Sunday.
Mike Ryan has been transferred to Kindred Hospital in Lawndale and is currently receiving dialysis. Your prayers, please, for Mike's well-being.
Marilyn McDougall has replaced the immobilizer on her leg with a walking cane. It's still a tough go but it doesn't stop her from going out to feed the horses .... Wayne? He has been moved to the 2nd floor at River's Edge rehab. His wit? It's pretty good. He wanted to go back to the 1st floor. Marilyn said, "Why? You have everything you need right here." Wayne said, "There's one thing they don't have." Marilyn asked, "What's that?" Wayne promptly said, "The door."
Teagan Thomas? Son of Ashley & Tracey Parsons-Thomas? The little baby we baptized not so long ago? He's walking! We caught him making his way to the door leading into church. Life is about to change for Ashley & Tracey. In a big way.
Marie Bright and Chuck Pingue have been waiting nervously for a bishop's thumb's-up ... and they have it! We are proceeding with plans for their marriage at All Saints' in May. Bishop Michel asked that we give Marie & Chuck his congratulations and best wishes. And so we have.
Peg & Earl Schoen? Not seeing them around? Snowbirds again. They are spending most of February in Florida. You'll know when Peg & Earl are back. They'll be the only folk in the pew with a tan.
Irene Snider may be a grandmother yet. The one thing she most wants to be. OK, that's pushing it a little, but Steve & Irene's younger son (also a Steve) is back from Warsaw, Poland. He took a ring with him and came home without it. It means Katarzyna said, "Yes!" Immigration for her is a long and arduous task so your prayers, please, that this all works out.
Dave & Radell Thomas went cruising again. This time to the Caribbean. Maybe they will compete with Peg & Earl in the Best Tan Contest at coffee hour.
Jude Winters is competing in the Worst Commute contest. Beginning in February her job requires Jude to commute to Jersey City, NJ from her home in Philadelphia. Put an arm around Jude the next time you see her. She'll be Queen of the Road by next week.
Wait! Stop! Before you continue reading....this is just a friendly reminder: please do NOT use your 2011 All Saints' envelopes. Your envelope number changes from year to year - if you use an old envelope, someone else will receive credit instead of you!

A Slice
of the History of All Saints' Church
I am sure I am not the only newer (translation: here less than 10 yrs) member to All Saints' Church and I'm surprised at just how little I know of it's history!
I think it's only fitting as we reach the 240th year (yes, 240th!) year that we take a trip down memory lane...and share a snippet of our past over the next few months. Thanks to Cary Rush for lending us these excerpts! Christina (Newsletter Editor)
History of All Saints' Church - the Early Years Just as a parish today reflects the people of its area, it may be helpful to attempt to shift our thinking back to the eighteenth century and try to visualize the Torresdale community that became the parish of All Saints' Church. The area was a rural one, originally settled by the Swedes who had preceded the English along the Delaware River. The Swedish domination of the area had been ended by successive military victories by both the Dutch and English in the seventeenth century, but the Swedish settlers were still a part of this community in the eighteenth century. The Swedish missionaries were responsible for much of the early religious life of the community. Our first rector, Dr. William Smith, served this area along with the Swedish missionary and together they fostered the religious life of the community. It was from a Swede, Christian Minnick, that Dr. Smith obtained his grant of land in 1771 to build a first church and there is evidence to suggest that this may have been a joint venture with the Swedes. By 1756, Bristol Pike saw the beginning of regular stagecoach service between Philadelphia and New York City. In 1697, a stone bridge was built over the Pennypack Creek as part of the King's Highway. It was between the tenth and eleventh milestones of the Pike that All Saints' Church was built. No doubt, the choice of a site for the original All Saints' Church building was dictated to some degree by the availability of a good road along the property The first Episcopalian Church in the area was Trinity Church, Oxford which initially had been a Quaker meeting until 1698 when they converted to the Church of England and erected the present building in 1711. Trinity Church was of course to be the base from which All Saints' Church was to grow. Politically, the area was part of Philadelphia County, but not part of the City of Philadelphia. The site of All Saints Church was in Dublin Township until 1784 when Upper and Lower Dublin Townships were created with Upper Dublin becoming part of the new Montgomery County. Lower Dublin was to be split again in 1852 into Lower Dublin and Delaware Townships. All Saints' Church, however, continues to carry on its corporate seal "All Saints' Church, Lower Dublin" since that was its political location on the date of its incorporation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Delaware Township, however, was to be short lived since in 1854 the city and county of Philadelphia became one when the Consolidation Act was signed. "...The New Church in Oxford Mission is called All Saints', and is crowded whenever there is Service in it ..." This statement in a letter from Dr. William Smith to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) in London, is part of the correspondence still intact today which has provided us with the only definitive record of the founding of All Saints' Church. The first mention of any intent to build a new church is contained in Dr. Smith's May 3, 1771 letter to the SPG in which he wrote that, "... We are this Summer about erecting a New Church about 5 miles from Oxford Church, for the better accommodating part of the Mission; and after preaching in the Forenoon at Oxford, I go once a month in the afternoon to that place, and the Swedish Missionary from Philadelphia also goes once a month...". From an historical standpoint, the correspondence between Dr. Smith and the SPG is invaluable as we attempt to look back in time. The motivation for the detailed correspondence on Dr. Smith's part was simply that the Oxford Mission (Trinity Oxford) was not self-supporting and Dr. Smith depended on the SPG for financial assistance in his work. Viewed from this perspective, it is somewhat easier to accommodate some of Dr. Smith's glowing accounts of his accomplishments to his benefactors in London who had to rely solely on his reports to determine the funds he would receive from them. ...stay tuned for next month - The Formal Beginnings of All Saints' |
